Under proposals from a cross-party Parliamentary Commission in France today, Muslim women face a ban on full veils on French transport and in other public services by the end of this year. MPs predicted that a law outlawing burqas or other face covering in state services could very well pass into law within months in [...]

Ah, the healthcare debate. It’s reaching all kinds of wild, deeply discriminatory levels, which usually boil down to a “I got mine, so fuck you and yours” attitude. The latest manifestation of this is the gender-based arguments arising around health care. Presently, women’s advocacy groups are trying to work with the legislators of the health [...]

A comprehensive new study found low-wage workers are routinely denied proper overtime pay and are often paid less than the minimum wage. The study surveyed 4,387 workers (39% illegal immigrants, 31% legal immigrants, and 30% native-born Americans) in various low-wage industries, including apparel manufacturing, child care and discount retailing.

According to a study published in the journal BMC Public Health, children as young as 10- and 11-years-old already have notions about the ideal body. An analysis of more than 4,000 students revealed that young girls’ happiness with their body image is directly linked to how thin they are, while boys were happiest when they [...]

A new study in Psychology of Women Quarterly finds that feminists are “man-haters” after all (duh!), but rather, that it is anti-feminists who harbor more negative feelings towards men. According to the researchers from the University of Houston, “our work finds that, indeed, non-feminists believe in traditional gender roles such as men being breadwinners and [...]

In a NY Times op-ed piece, Nicholas Kristof discusses maternal mortality, and the systematic inattention of our society towards reproductive health care, particularly when those who suffer and perish are impoverished, voiceless women (in this case, in Pakistan). He posits the following, which I’d like to make today’s thought for the day: “If men had [...]

Roughly 74 percent of the 6 million or so jobs lost in this recession have been men’s, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a statistic which has resulted in the uptick of another one: relationship problems (and subsequent divorces). This because earning a living is still centrally tied to male self-esteem, since Tarzan still [...]

The WSJ‘s Pulitzer-winning journalism team has decided to devote front page coverage to the LATEST! and VERY!IMPORTANT! problem area of women’s bodies… cankles! A cankle, for those of you who don’t know, is a fat ankle, the calf-ankle continuum, apparently only found on women. How does one define a “fat ankle” you ask? Who the [...]

I’ve tried to steer clear of the “controversy” surrounding Surgeon General nominee Dr. Regina Benjamin, as a means of undermining, or at least, not furthering or validating the insanity of arguments pertaining to her weight. Because I don’t see what a person’s weight, color or sex have to do with their mental ability, at all, [...]
